On January 17, 2012, the Department of the Interior announced a nationwide, federal ban on 4 species of snakes. The ban prohibits importation, and interstate transport of these snakes including the Burmese python.

The logic behind the ban was to help prevent any further damage to the everglades which have an existing population of these pythons.

The problem is that this will do absolutely nothing to reduce the population in the everglades. Florida already has laws in place controlling the ownership of these animals entirely. Making it a felony to bring one into Alaska hardly solves the problem in Florida.

These animals were slipped onto the Lacey Act. This Act is in place to prevent the transport of illegally collected game. This is a misuse of the Lacey Act.

Clearly this is nothing more than a way for politicians to “put themselves on the map” and a victory to certain special interest groups whose ultimate goal is to abolish animal ownership. They start with the easy ones that most people don’t like or are afraid of -  like these snakes - but once they have conquered the reptile industry they will move on to horses, cows, chickens, aquarium fish, birds, rats, hamsters,  even cats and dogs. You name it. Pit bulls are already on the chopping block as it is.  The major culprits are PETA and HSUS. The Humane Society of the United States puts heartbreaking commercials on TV trying to con good-intentioned animal lovers into giving them donations. Please, don’t be fooled. They don’t spend any money actually helping animals. All of those donations go into funding legislation like this.  For more information on how HSUS actually operates, please visit www.humanewatch.org.  You can follow them on Facebook, too.

Fluffy is next! Feral cats do more damage to the environment than these snakes, and horses are certainly responsible for way more human injuries and deaths each year. If you don’t think that this is reality you need to wake up! These radical anti-animal-ownership activists (who operate under the illusion of "animal rights") will not stop until there are no more animals in captivity.

This ban WILL hurt American business and cost jobs. In a time of economic difficulty this legislation can be crippling to hard working families and individuals who make a living breeding these animals.

This ban will turn responsible pet owners into felons.

Even if you don’t like snakes, please take this seriously! You may not like to bungee jump, ride motorcycles or do any number of things but that doesn’t mean it should be illegal for others who may want to.

What can you do?

At this time we are still trying to pull everything together and fight the good fight. Right now USARK and PIJAC are our main allies. They are out there fighting this legislation. Please support them and spread the word to all of your family and friends. This does not just affect pet owners, but every American who values their freedom and right to make their own decisions.
